Dear Friends and Family:

Thanks for your prayers for our family. Last week, Marty had an extra week off of her chemo regimen while the doctor was on vacation. We got some cheap airfare tickets and stayed for a week in Naples, Florida with friends. We had a great time of rest and relaxation before returning in time for the next round of the chemotherapy. The doctor recommends treatments on alternate weeks for the foreseeable future [one week onâ€”one week off].
We had nearly given up hope for Amy’s trip to Kenya, but the agreement between the rival government factions has held; peace has prevailed in most areas of Kenya. God has opened the door for Amy to return to Tenwek for six weeks beginning Tuesday, March 18. Her agenda includes working in the Orthopedic clinic, physical therapy, and other general helps as well as attending the WGM field retreat in Malindi, Kenya on the Indian Ocean where she will teach Bible lessons to missionary kids ages 9-12. This takes place April 11-15. She’ll return to the US on April 30. Please pray for Amy’s safety during travel and her time in Kenya.
Amy plans on visiting all of our orphanages while she’s in Kenya. Marty is busy writing letters to the children and packing some clothing. Baggage allowance is now only 100 lbs total rather than 210 lbs per person we have enjoyed previously. We really need to find someone going to Tenwek with a container in which we could pack some of the half-ton of clothes we have ready to send. She is carrying gifts for missionaries and other add-ons as favors for others; this is a normal part of serving as a visitor.
Meanwhile, the government parties are still in a honeymoon period but are beginning to find out there is a marriage to live out after the wedding. They are still working out areas of responsibility and authority; some ministers stand to lose positions of authority to the other party; predictably, some are unhappy.
Prices of commodities have made it difficult for families to maintain the standard of living they enjoyed before the elections. Bread, maize, cooking oil, lard, meat, beansâ€”basic staples of the normal diet are at least 30% higher in many areas. Petroleum products are naturally higher as they are worldwide meaning that transportation costs are higher. Wrecking an economy took only a month; recovery will take years.
We heard from one of our homes, Kenduiwo; they had to take in two additional children from very bad situations. They now have 12 girls and 17 boys. Naturally their operational costs go up with additional children; hopefully support will increase as they add more children. The director reported that the $2,000 corn grinding machine that was donated last year is finally working. A $13 part had failed, but it took many months to get the problem remedied. This machine should generate some money for the home helping it towards self-sufficiency. Thank you for praying for this need. We’ve also received some funds to finish some of the new buildings at the site.
Our association with Hope Ministries, Inc. already has proven a blessing. We sent a wire transfer last week which we hope will cover the school fees for the first three months of the school year. We’ll send some additional support for the orphanages this week. With no banking or administration fees and a lower wire transfer fee, our funds should stretch to meet additional needs.
