Dear Family and Friends:

I wanted to give you a brief update on Amy and Laura’s trip to Tenwek as well as some new prayer requests. Laura wrote the following report:

I was blessed to serve at Tenwek Hospital for one month. God provided many opportunities to serve, and I want to report them here…

Orphans… Amy and I visited 2 orphanages, Umoja and Kenduiwa, and took many clothes to the children there. We played and sang songs with the children. It was fun to spend time with the kids and share Jesus’ love with these precious little ones. I was encouraged to see that they are all being taught about God’s love for them and are led in regular Bible study by their care takers in the homes.

Music… I also was able to serve on the music team for Sunday morning worship. We led the worship for 2 of the weeks and helped with the 3rd week.

Hospital… Dr. Carol Spears who is a surgeon at Tenwek has been working with the Smile Train to do corrective surgery on children who have facial deformities with cleft lips and the like. She has done many surgeries with the sponsoring of Smile Train on kids and people of all ages who have struggled with this problem, yet don’t have the money for the surgery.
Well, it has been a year since she started doing this, but she needed to report back to the Smile Train with these patients’ medical charts along with before and after pictures so that they would send more money for more people in need of surgery. … Carol is so busy that she never could have gotten these all together, and God allowed me to help her with this. I was able to get all the paper work done for her, and we were able to send the reports back just before the deadline so that now she can get more sponsoring for the patients. I was happy to do this knowing that each of these patients will not only be changed physically, but I know that the faithful staff at Tenwek will share the love of Christ with these people.
Amy and I also put in a new Christian Literature section into the Nursing School library. We started a new system for the “religious books” (as the rest are medical) and so we needed to start a new system and put those books in for the use of the nursing students at Tenwek.

Amy and I enjoyed entertaining many of the missionaries and visiting staff to encourage them as they are all working so hard. It was a blessing to serve our fellow missionaries in this way.
There were also a couple of visitors the same age as Amy and I, and we were able to share the Gospel with these girls as they are not believers. I am so thankful for the opportunities that God gave me to share about Him.

Another big project that Amy and I worked on was to clean out all the possessions of Dad and Mom’s that were left in the apartment there at Tenwek. The Hospital needs that house for future new missionaries, so we had to get rid of a lot of the stuff there.

New Prayer Requests:

As you may know, Tenwek Staff Pastor, Reverend David Kilel assists us in the administration of our orphanages and assistance to community-based widows and orphans. He has repeated expressed his appreciation to us and our supporters for the wonderful support that we are sending regularly. We are current on our school fees, and no students were sent home this year for late payment.
He has forwarded a prayer request for an upcoming event which I am passing along to you. On Saturday, April 25, he and other pastors will hold a meeting to encourage those orphans whom we are supporting in school. This kind of meeting has born fruit in the past as the young people are challenged to give their lives to God for His use. Each knows his own unique situation and the blessing he has received by being sponsored. Would you pray this week that each young person could be contacted, attend the meeting, and dedicated to the Lord’s service?
David also reports that near famine conditions continue throughout the area. Our homes have received funds to purchase food for the children through your generosity.
Please pray for continued support for the children. Donations can be made to Hope Ministries Inc., 9902 E 200 South, Zionsville, IN 46077. One hundred percent of all donations reach the orphans and widows in the Tenwek area since our operating expenses are covered by a donor. Hope Ministries will issue a receipt for income tax purposes, as it is an approved 501 (c) (3) corporation.

Marty has an appointment for chemotherapy tomorrow morning; we continue to pray for God’s complete healing for her. A close friend of ours, Mary Ellen Kessler, also begins her chemotherapy for stage 4 ovarian cancer on Tuesday as well. She has been a tireless, active supporter of our orphans for many years.

I have been requested to speak with local Teens for Life leaders on Wednesday evening, April 29. Please pray for protection from the spiritual warfare that surrounds such events. My talk at a CPC fundraiser in St. Louis went well this past week. However, we’ve been aware of fairly intense spiritual warfare for the past several weeks that continues to take its toll on our emotions and health. Our only weapons against this warfare are prayer and the Word of God. Please pray for our strength and protection.

We praise God for the safe arrival of our 20th grandchild, Matthew David Jarrett, born to Pat and Lisa Jarrett on April 9.
